THE FREAKY WILD CROWD @ 11 pm
"It’s a total dud. This yr's juke-box sucks.”.This is what was going thru my mind till the evening of the first day of Utkarsh-’07 but soon I was to be proved wrong when by evening the entire court was jam packed with the crowd dancing madly to the blaring music.
This year’s juke-box was something that we as well as our juniors will remember in the years to come. Without a second thought, I can say our juke-box was even better than KGP’s .All our creative endeaveours & endless meetings bloomed fully during these three days.We put so much effort in making those posters of G-stall with the smiling big photo of Gandhi visible around the college..Guys,Gandhi indeed got his 30 secs(oops! 3 days) of long-deserved fame.(pun intended!)
Frankly speaking, when we( Da Juke-box gang-Rathz,Raj,Dion & of course, me) were working on introducing competitions like Sudoku, N-snake, Chirkutting, Blind Date etc. I was pretty skeptical about the response our these new ideas will get from the crowd especially about the success of the ‘Blind Date’ thing . I wasn’t expecting that any gal would be interested in it-only to be proved wrong again.
DA JUKE-BOX GANG (Camera: Flash : oops! my eyes closed !!)
With the start of 2nd day, all those rats started coming out of their rat-holes. I, who himself hasn’t solved a single sudoku till date, was surprised to see people jostling for participation in Sudoku. N-snake also received pretty gud response from all those poor souls who would ‘ve drawn flak from others for wasting their time playing Snake on their Nokias & ya! the thing I was most skeptical about –Blind Date proved to the biggest hit. In the morning, the registrations were just mild but huh ho!! to our utter amazement all the chicks walked in & wat say, after dat the registrations zoomed across the sky crossing the 150 . Overjoyed with the crowd response ,we came up with a Fear-Factor like idea at 10 in the nite but now we were sure that it’s gonna be a huge hit nxt day & we were not wrong !!
& all this wouldn’t have being possible without our planning & also the cooperation of our jrs - Sameer(for DJing),Nandy(for sacrificing his lappy), ,Masca(for slogging hs ass in registrations) ,Golu(for the Fear Factor idea & of course, his bike) & Shankar(for keeping the crowd engaged ). Now that Utkarsh is over ,All I can say is that we were determined to make this Utkarsh a big hit & we did it!! Now we’ve set a benchmark ,I hope our junior batchs take this mark even higher & make the nxt yr’s Utkarsh even a bigger hit.
For those of u who’ve weren’t here try this tongue twister which was the one among many I gave to the crowd but which even a single person couldn’t get perfectly rite(even I’d to practice it countless times to get it perfectly rite):
“Betty bought a bit of butter, but the bit of butter was a bit butter so she bought a bit of better butter to make the bit of bitter butter a bit better”
Cheers!!

It's 2 in the night, a lot of fleeting thoughts are doing the rounds of my head .
Just felt like penning down some of these.
As an another day of my life comes to an end,
My heart & mind still fighting, no more they are friends.
For sure, what one wants to say the other understands
Yet they refuse to budge from their own stands
My mind is strong yet so volatile
My heart is like a stone yet so fragile.
My mind turns a deaf ear to what my heart has to say
My mind wants to sail ahead while my heart wants to rest at bay
Sometimes life rips me apart & then I feel
How can this happen with me ,is this for real?
Is it true or is it just my worst fear?
But my mind says you’ve to face it ‘coz this is for real
you live in a world where there’s no mercy for the “dying”,my dear
Even if you fail , you’ve to learn to hide your tears
You have to keep on moving to be right there.
You may get tired , rest u mustn’t ,harder u have to strive
No time to smell the roses if u want to be “someone” in your life.
Till now u had just heard that glory road is tough
Now it’s ur time to tread & feel what this road is like.
But my heart asks me am I sure about what I want from my life?
Are money & fame the only things for which I want to survive?
In this berserk race from dawn to dusk haven’t I forgotten to be really alive?
Yes,I’ve long forgotten the chirping of birds & how that red rising sun looks like
Yes, It seems likes ages when I’ve been alone & felt nostalgic about home
with the sun down on the horizon & those trains passing by.
Yes, It seems like eons when I’ve been to a river & swam my heart out only to get tired
Time is now slipping out of my hands as moments just pass by
Still in a dilemma which of the “two lives” will let me drink the nectare of life
It’s still hazy & it’s still difficult to decide…

It's been the toast of discussion for rap fans all over the world who’s better –50 cent (Curtis Jackson) Or Eminem (Marshall Matthers) aka SlimShady aka Rabbit (nickname) . I’ve been following these discussions on communities ,web-mags & other rap sites but these who-rules-the-rap-world debates never end with a clear winner .So here’s my take on the Rap Ruler:.
Talking about 50 ,he himself works under Marshall’s Shady Records label .Although he got better offers from other production houses he chose to work for Shady Records ‘coz he knew that he’d be able to say whatever he wanted under Shady Records .Last year ,50 broke the record of the legendary rock ‘n’ roll band The Beatles for having max no of songs in top 50 at the same time on the Billboard .No doubt,he’s got a formidable fan following but I really feel his music sucks big-time.His rapping style is what I call sleepy-rap where he just keeps on droning without any voice variation with some busty babes giving him a great time. His lyrics is something very difficult to relate to .Even his biggest hits like P.I..M.P ,Candy shop don’t have that cuss which can make me listen to him again & again or even try learning his rapping style..
Now comes the Man-the man whose I’m the biggest fan ,a fan even bigger than Stan-Eminem.The best thing about his rap is it comes straight from his heart & something I can relate to. No wonder, in 2002 ,he was voted the 2nd most powerful celebrity on the earth .In each of his songs & in each of his lines u’ll see a reflection of evry feeling, emotion, thought which are buried inside evryone’s heart & mind . His frustrations, failures, pain, hope, dedication,journey-to-zenith are somethings which u can easily relate to .He has never hesitated to target whatsoever & whomsoever he doesn’t like .No wonder N-sync ,Christina Aug., MJ, Elvis, Tom Green, Mrs. Cheney, George Bush. among others have been at his receiving end .
For me,Shady is the uncrowned ruler of the Rap world & I m not saying that ‘coz I’m his die-hard fan but ‘coz his music & lyrics has something which liberates ur heart, mind & soul. No other rapper would have inspired & changed the lives of so many people (I being one !) around the world. Marshall has done that.
Hail Eminem!!

Well , it’s 3 in the night .Now that may seem pretty too-late-to-be-awake to you but seems like everyone in the hostel is wide awake & having a great time. Some rooms are thundering with voices booming outta their 5000 watt speakers(seems like these guys want to blow off this hostel !) ,a few are out on their bikes while some of us are busy misusing the Internet .After all, today our mid-sem exams got over.
As I pass-out from this college, time & again , I ask myself “ Can I really call myself an engineer ?” What an engineer have I become? What have I learnt during these 4 yrs? A little personal background will let u know what does being an engineer means to me . I belong to a family where every other person is in the armed forces..My dad & my own Chacha being in the Para Commandos(Special Forces) .Others are in Artillery regmts ,Garwhal Rifles, NSG, BSF,CRPF, ITBF & God know which all other forces . I don’t know why I wanted to do engineering but as I reached 7 or 8 th std-when one starts knowing about careers options- one thing I was damn sure about was that if I’ll do something that “something” has to be this thing i.e. Engg & that too from a good college .Thanx to Discovery channel, I started over-estimating my future capabilities as an engineer. All those robo wars, microchips, space shuttles used to leave me absolutely fascinated . Fortunately (& unfortunately too!!) I landed up doing engineering .Now, whenever I go home , my dad & my relatives who just have a vague idea about engg. ask me one question - the answer to which I still haven’t figured out in all these four years :”Ok! beta Tell me you are an Electronics engineer, so what can you design, what all things can you make” & I reply with the same I-still-don’t-know expressions on my face “Well, I can design….”..& there I’m ,never able to complete my sentence .Sounds funny? Yea ,it is.After that, from somehow I make up an answer & say “ Actually we learn theory in the college & apply it in the industry.” Whereas the truth is whatever we are learning will go down the drain if we join the software industry-which almost all of us are gonna do. Well , what real knowledge have we gained studying in a premier engg college of India ?
In this sem, I’ve subjects with names which may leave u in awe like Artificial Intelligence, MIS(Mgmt Information Systems) etc. but how much did I study for these exams ?. On an avg just a total of 5-6 hrs for each of the subjects. No , not 5 hrs/day but only 5 hrs before the exam day.Now as my 4 yrs in this college come to an end,I’m still wondering if I can actually make something. Robots & chips have become things I’ve become quite allergic with & the truth is that I don’t know even the basics. of Robotics .Well, all this is coming out from the mouth of a guy who ‘s soon gonna be awarded a prestigious B.Tech(Hons.) degree from one of the top ranking engg. colleges-National Institute of Technology,Jamshedpur ( I wrote the full form to remind myself that I’m studying in a top-ranking engg. college, alas,I’d long forgotton this!!) .We all have made studies a big joke here .Haven't we?
But should I blame myself who could have learnt something but didn’t even try doing that ? Most of we poor souls fall under this category .Don’t we ?
Or the “system” which drifted away the interest of a onetime book-worm(now dat’s embarrassing confession!! )from studies to things which don’t have even remote connection with studies ?
I don’t know whether this college made me a good engineer or not but on the bang of a fist I can say that it has fully prepared me to face any situation in life & now we can live in any type of condition anywhere on the earth. I guess ppl passing out from here wouldn’t have any difficulty coping up with life even in an African country( no pun intended.haha)
Cheers!!

English is a pretty funny language.I know u’ve heard it a thousand times & now it’s just an another cliché.Right. More often than not ,we make it even more funnier. The truth is however hard we may try, whatever be our comfort levels with this language it’s not the mother tongue for a majority of us( my friend ‘firang’ being in that thin minority) & we all(including that ‘firang’ friend of mine) do commit mistakes .Don’t we?Maybe you don’t but I do & whether the other person notices it or not I instantly realize that I’ve made a mistake & that leaves me pretty embarrassed. Yes! it does leave me embarrassed but I try to make sure that next time I don’t goof up the words..
Now , I’ve this spit-it-out-on-your-face attitude for which I’m notorious ( can’t help it anyway). So please guys, if u are reading this write-up & u are the one of those persons who ‘ve made the mistakes mentioned below I apologise(although insincerely ) for making it public.
Recently,I was interviewing my junior folks in the college for selecting them in the Sponsorship committee for our college fest which is now round the corner.I came across one particular guy who, believe me, gave me the laugh of my life.So there we were:
“Do you listen to music? “
“ Yes ,Sir”
“ English or Hindi”
“Both”
“So which all bands do you listen to in English?”
The chap stares at me as though I’ve asked something too personal to feel offended then he replies
“I like Linking PAARAK & BHENGABOYS”
“Wat? I didn’t get you.”
“Sir,Linking PAARAK & BHENGABOYS”
“You mean Linkin Park & Vengaboys”
“Ji, Ji”
“So which all songs of LP do you like?”
Looks up at the ceiling as though he has lost his memory his memory in an accident & is now trying to recall his name.
“Sir, I’m not knowing the names but I’m hearing the songs in the hostel.I like them”
“& wat about your BHENGABOYS”
This time he replies back in a jiffy.
“BRAAJIL”
After the poor soul had gone, I who loves playing the devil’s advocate burst out laughing.
Sometimes I do get to see some equally funny & interesting profiles of people on Orkut, which is spreading faster than a wildfire among Gen-X. See for yourself
About me: I’m a cool,calm & COMPOSING guy.
About me:I’m a 21 yr old guy with a Nice Figure .
About me:I’m still trying to Figuring it out.. .
Perfect match: Hrithik Roshan man he’s Flattering.
Ok! The last one would definitely have been an inadvertent mistake but about rest I can’t say the same & the funny thing is that I keep visiting their profiles to check whether they’ve corrected those howlers or not but ,dude, they are still safely hanging on there .
& yea about the howlers I commit. They are ,in fact, so numerous(one being in the last sentence itself!!) that I don’t even remember one.So what I’m trying to say ( to you as well as to myself) is that Ok! If you’ve learnt something new ,use it.but just because you’ve learnt it doesn’t mean that you HAVE to use it ,” Niece figure” instance being a case in point & it’s better to let others know what you really know rather than just pretending to know what you don’t .”Bhengaboys & LP” instance being the case in point.
Yea,I’m sure your razor sharp minds would’ve definitely noticed the howlers in this write-up itself.Drop in your comments if you’ve & also plz feel free to share some other howlers even if they are too embarrassing for you or maybe for me :).
Cheers!!!

I differentiate people on what they believe in .One category of people believes in the adage”It’s better to know 100% of one thing rather than 1% of 100 things”.The second category of people live by the motto :”Jack of all trades & master of none’.You’re reading an article of a guy who believes in a third category :"Jack of all trades & Master of ONE".
[Disclaimer:I believe in it but haven't been able to execute it myself]
Before telling u about that category I’ll will explain u why I want to desperately get out of Category II to which I belong currently.
Category I :people are pefectionist. At least they firmly believe that they are so even though ,in reality, they’re may be not .i quite appreciate these people as they are the masters of their field & are the sort of people who take the society forward. But now comes my actual view of them:They’re people who are among some of the most boring people to talk to .You get pissed of hearing about the same topic again & again. The moment youl divert them from their field of interest they’ll be sitting like dumb duffers at a corner in the room(No hard feeling 4 such good ,but I’ve say the truth). They’ll be searching for opportunities to divert the topic back to their own field & at that moment u feel like becoming a Psychotic killer & whacking the hell out of them. You ask them about anything not related to their field & u'll see them throwing those foolish smiles .
Now get ready 4 some never-heard-before answers for one of the most easiest Qs u’d have ever heard.
Recently on MTV ,a couple of celebrities (all science graduates) were asked the following question:
Interviewer:What’s a light year?
(All scratch their heads as though they’re gonna introduce some new Relativity Theory & hereeeee we gooo with their whacky answers)
Celebrity1:I can’t recall it exactly but I guess it should be a year which is light.
Celebrity2(Quite confidently)A year in which no disasters,you know,like
floods ,Tsunami, you know, earthquake occurs.(Good jughead ,indeed!)
Celebrity3(a hot babe):Of course ,a year in which there’s,you know,no light ,there's no power. You know, some parts of our country r still very backward(Go & talk to our politicians about this.At least they’ll wake up to the problems after seeing such a sizzling babe..Won't they?)
Celebrity4: Wat? a light year..ummm..sorry..Never heard this term before. No clue!!(See the quality of science graduates we’re churning out.Downright Pathetic ;) )
Celebrity5: A year in which there is lots-n-lots of partying, dating.I mean, evrybody is happy ,cool. They feel light, relieved of tensions (Indeed Mr. Celeb !!At least after listening 2 ur foolish answers ,we’ll feel light,Won’t we?)
Celebrity6: The distance light travels in 1 year in a light year.
Oh God,did i hear a correct ans..did i? at least one genius among a bunch of morons.I’m so elated to see ,at least, the collective score of these Page 3 celebs is not zilch!.
Byee 4 now ,I’ll discuss(read faultfinding) Category 2 ppl & of course the category 3 ppl in the coming posts.

Now & then ,I get perlpexed what should be deemed right & what should be deemed wrong What is that which separates the RIGHT from the WRONG.Is it merely the relative spectrum through hcih we see things right or wrong or Is there an absolute truth Mor often than not ,I ponder on whether there is any absolute maturity or is it relative?.
I stoicly believe in Einstein’s Theory of Relativity(although I dunno what exactly it is!!) “Everything is relative in this world. We see things differently as our frame of Reference changes”. & time & again I see it’s application in my life .In my opinion ,the same holds true as we grow & enter the maturing phase(which doesn’t last even when we become old.)
I’ll take my example with which ,I’m sure, you would agree & you’ll be able to correlate the same thing in your life. When I entered my teenage years,I strongly believed that drinking & smoking are bad habits,so drinkers & smokers are bad guys of the society. That time I firmly believed that there can be no two sides of this & if you agree with me then you are a good guy/gal & disagreeing with me would put you in the bad boy/gal category.
Time matures all.So did it me.When I came to the college I realized how immature that starting-teen years myself was who judged people on their smoking/drinking habits ,.
Now I’ve good friends who smoke/drink & I find that these guys r as normal as u & me & even better than some of us.Now comes the paradox ,I don’t smoke/drink myself although I know that a peg of alcohol ,now & then, will not make you an addict. Why haven’t I taken up smoking/drinking ? I dunno .May be I’m scared that I’ll become an addict & will be more at the bars & beer shops rather than doing something worthwile.Probably I’m afraid that I may go a step higher in the ladder of “Maturity” & do drugs-come on,Changing Frame of Reference!!Isn’t it?.But how can I say that I’ll become so & so when I’ven’t tried & tested anything ..So does this mean that I shouls test it once & leave it immediately after that or I should be a complete teetotaller?I know that nobody can answer this(like nobody can answer:Why pre-marital sex is bad? If u’ve any answer just drop in a reply )I know that I ‘ll not take up smoking/drinking (at least in the near future)but who knows my “Frame of Reference “ may take a complete U-turn sometime in the future when I’ll deem myself to be “maturer” &may be I’ll look back & laugh at the “immaturish” thinking of that post-teen myself who wrote a topic “The changing frames of Maturity”
So is there an absolute Maturity & when does one achieve it?At an age of 20 or 40 or 60? .I’m sorry I can’t answer both the Qs .What I can definitely say that a 50-year old person can be as immaturish as a child entering his teenage years & vice-versa.
I dunno what Maturity is & how do you define it?It gives a sense of “maturity” to adults when they scold children & ask them to grow up & be more mature .But ,more often than not, they are the ones who fight more childlishly amongst themselves.
They feel like “grown-ups” when they ask their chidren to respect their elders & will leave their throats hoarse by preaching sermons day-in & day-out ,but will go nuts if their own octagenarian parents ask for a little favour.
I call this hypocrsisy.Black dot on the word Maturity. If you feel “mature” enough to preach something then you should be really mature enough to preach it.
In my view ,maturity is no less than a mirage. From a distance it seems very close. It seems we’r very close to attaining the maturity level but when we get close to it, it disappears. We start, again, in search of that maturity level but what we get is merely an illusion.
I think that each of us has some real maturity & some seemingly-real maturity.
I believe a person ca be really mature when his “Real Maturity” part comes to the forefront & the “seemingly-real Maturity” takes a back-seat.And this can be achieved by looking in your inner-self & searching out that "Maturity" from the debris.
